Apart from using a Confirmation or Subscription Form to collect consent from your contacts, MarketingPlatform offers the possibility to send a Confirmation Email with Autoresponders.

In this way, you can send an email/SMS campaign containing a Confirm Link to collect consent from unconfirmed contacts on your list. Only when they have confirmed, will they get an active or confirmed status on your list.

In order for your contacts to receive a Confirmation Email, you must have enabled this option when creating your Autoresponder and added your profiles to autoresponders when importing your contact list(s).

1. Create an Autoresponder and include a Confirm Link

To create an Autoresponder, access the “Automated Flows” dropdown menu on the left side of your screen and click on “Autoresponders”.

Start by selecting your list and click on “Create an Autoresponder”.

Name your autoresponder and click on “Next”. The name should be clear and easily identifiable for you and others that may need to work from your account on the platform.

In the next step, you need to select the content that you wish to send to your unconfirmed contacts. Once you have selected “Email Campaign” or “SMS Campaign”, you will be provided with an option to use the autoresponder to send a Confirmation Email to unconfirmed profiles (see image below). Select the option and choose the desired email/SMS campaign from the list of available campaigns.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for sending a Confirmation Email with Autoresponders.

Please note, that in order for you to be able to use this option, you must have previously included a Confirm Link in your email/SMS campaign. Otherwise, once you select the option, you won’t see any available email/SMS campaigns to choose from, as there are no campaigns that contain a Confirm Link for the list you have chosen.

Once you have enabled the option and chosen your email/SMS campaign, you will be taken to the next step where you should choose when to send the autoresponder. At this point, you will have two options:

  • As soon as the Profile joins my list – your confirmed contacts will receive the autoresponder once they have joined your list
  • After the Profile has been on my list for – you can define the time elapsed before the autoresponder is sent to your confirmed contacts (the minimum time is 1 h).

In the last step, as usual, you need to define the sending details:

  • Send From This Name – the default “From” name that will be seen by your subscribers when you send a campaign to them.
  • Send From This Email Address – the email address which will be used when you send a campaign to your contact list – the email address that will be visible to your recipients.
  • Send Reply Emails to – the email address that your recipients can use if they want to reply to your email.
  • Select Thank You Email – the email that your contacts will receive once they have clicked on the Confirm Link and given their consent. In order to enable this option, you should create your Thank You Email in advance.
  • Take Subscriber To An URL – the landing page to which your confirmed profiles will land on once they have opted-in.

Also, you can apply other settings available:

  • Google Analytics – track the campaign using Google Analytics
  • Set Activity Time – specify time of the day executing the activities
  • Filter this Autoresponder using the following Segment – use Segment(s) as a filter, so only profiles meeting the rules in the segment are receiving this Autoresponder.

Finally, click on “Save and Activate” and the autoresponder will become active.

2. How to send a Confirmation Email with Autoresponders

In order for your autoresponder to work, you must apply some settings and map your fields appropriately when importing your profiles.

Import of Confirmed and Unconfirmed Profiles

In case you are importing confirmed and unconfirmed profiles at the same time, you will need to include a confirmation status column (“Confirmed” or “Unconfirmed”) in your import sheet and map it using the system data field “Confirmed” (see image below).

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for sending a Confirmation Email with Autoresponders.

Upon importing your profiles, in Advanced Settings, you must select the option Add Profiles to Autoresponders. This will enable your contacts to receive any active autoresponders that you have created.

As the confirmation status will be registered by the system as defined in your import sheet, you don’t need to choose whether your contacts are Confirmed/Unconfirmed in the Advanced Settings. Thus, you can skip these fields, since the confirmation status will be registered exactly as defined in your import sheet (see image below).

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for sending a Confirmation Email with Autoresponders.

Import of Unconfirmed Profiles

In case you are importing only unconfirmed profiles, you do not need to include a confirmation status column in your import sheet. Instead, upon importing your profiles, you can mark them as Unconfirmed in the Advanced Settings (see image below).

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for sending a Confirmation Email with Autoresponders.

Once you upload your import sheet, you will not be asked to send a Confirmation Email to unconfirmed profiles as usual, due to the fact that you have added your profiles to autoresponders and the system recognizes that your autoresponder contains a Confirmation Link.

The FlowBuilder is a marketing automation tool that allows you to automate email workflows. In MarketingPlatform you can set up automated flows that will send the right message to your customers at the right time.

With our FlowBuilder, you have a wide range of possibilities to build, shape and customize your flows as you wish. All you need to do is outline an effective marketing strategy, create the segments, i.e., the target groups and tailored campaigns, and with this amazing tool, you can customize and build your automated flow in a matter of minutes.

This is a fully automated process, which once set up, can save you significant amounts of time. The automation will do everything for you, and you’ll only have to look at the statistics and “pick the fruits” of your labor.

Listen for when changes happens to data on your profiles

By adding the field listener to your flows, you’ll be able to listen for when a change has happened to a certain data field.

Once a change happens to the field, something you define will happen.

Example: once a change to an OTM field’s order date changes (a profile makes a new purchase), send an SMS or e-mail campaign.

Types of Flow

Here are a few ideas for automation flows:

  • Welcome flow for new subscribers and customers

One of the basic flows is the welcome flow. You can use it to introduce your business to new subscribers in an interesting and engaging way, while giving them an idea of what they can expect from you.

  • Product recommendations

With this flow, you can recommend products that your customer has already browsed or purchased on your web-shop. You can create interest-related campaigns featuring similar products, more products from that category, discount info/codes and the like.

  • Discounts

Discount codes are a great opportunity to engage your customers. You can use discounts in the most creative ways. If someone has visited a specific category/product, you can set a trigger, E.g., when someone visits a product/category you can follow up with an email campaign with a discount code for the specific product.

  • Celebrating Birthday/Anniversary

An effective way to show your customers that you care is to send them a birthday card. Celebrating anniversaries by sending email campaigns with special offers is a great chance to engage with them. With our automation tool, it can easily be set and done.

  • Order confirmation

With the order confirmation flows you can send email campaigns after a purchase and thus inform your customer about the order. It gives a sense of security and comfort and creates a better image of your company.

  • Abandoned cart

If a subscriber adds something to the cart without finishing the purchase, you can send them a follow-up email reminding them of the items they left in the cart. In this way, you can prompt the customer to complete their purchase.

  • Customer feedback review

If customer feedback is something you value greatly, you can set up a flow requesting feedback a few days after a purchase has been made. With this flow, you can improve your company’s image and increase the chances for new prospects. Collecting reviews from customers can be done in different ways. For instance, you can offer discounts or freebies and ask for feedback or recommendation on a recent purchase.

  • Re-engagement flow

With this flow, you can target inactive subscribers. If they’ve been inactive for a longer period of time and do not open your campaigns, with the re-engagement flow featuring new offers, recommendations or discounts, you can increase your chances of winning them back or, at least, clean your list of inactive subscribers.

Start creating your own flow

Just for illustration, we will demonstrate one way to create a Product recommendation flow.

It’s based on recognizing customer behavior and triggering a series of responses that will ideally lead to conversion.

This flow is ideal for subscribers who showed some interest in certain products, but haven’t made a purchase yet. What you can do is engage them with intelligently crafted email campaigns featuring similar or discounted products. Additionally, you can use a variety of recommendation types such as trending, top rated or most popular products, new arrivals and the like. The idea is to use email automation to send customers emails featuring products that will be interesting and relevant to them. Without knowing your subscribers’ interests, you can’t target them with personalized emails.

For instance, you can use data from Tracking to target subscribers with specific activity, such as:

  • subscribers that have bought from a category/product,
  • subscribers that have visited a category/product,
  • subscribers that have removed a product from cart, or
  • subscribers that have purchased an X number of times.

Furthermore, you can dive more deeply by combining subscriber’s activity with their interests; for e.g. a book store can have interest-based segments such as fiction, biography, romance, sci-fi, historical novels etc.

To start building your flow, you need to select Automated flows → Flowbuilder from the menu on the left.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for using FlowBuilder.

The first step in creating a flow is selecting the list the flow is built for. Next, you click on Create Flow, which will lead you to a blank FlowBuilder. Name and start building your flow in line with your marketing plan.

Again, it’s important to have the tailored email campaigns and segments prepared in advance.

Step 1

Just like the campaign builder, the flowbuilder also works on a drag and drop method. Open your flow by choosing a Start Point, which can be any event from the range of events in the right panel. For instance, you can start with a LeadScore higher than an X value, or an activity such as Opened/Clicked in Autoresponder/Trigger/Campaign.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for using FlowBuilder.

Step 2

So, you start your flow with more engaged subscribers, let’s say those with a lead score higher than 50. Taken that you already know your subscribers’ interests (either from their previous activity in your campaigns or interests they’ve selected in a survey), you’ve created a segment for each. The next step in your flow would be using a Segment Split, which would allow you to send campaigns with personalized content to each group.

Very often, subscribers will fall into more than one segment, and here you can decide if they’ll only be part of one segment (and receive one interest-based campaign in the flow) or all (and receive all interest-based campaigns).

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for using FlowBuilder.

Step 3

The next step is sending customized campaigns to each segment.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for using FlowBuilder.

The campaigns are made beforehand and selected in the flowbuilder along with sending time, sender info and Google analytics tracking.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for using FlowBuilder.

Step 4

In the next step you can use a Wait Timer to allow some time for your subscribers to interact with your campaign, so you can track their activity accordingly.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for using FlowBuilder.

If opens or clicks in the campaign is one of the metrics you’re following and it’s part of your marketing strategy, you can follow up with campaigns featuring different incentives for the ones that opened/clicked in the campaign as opposed to those that didn’t.

When the flow is complete, simply end it with the End Flow icon.

To engage your profiles and encourage them to interact with you, sending out a birthday email (possibly including a discount code), is relevant.

To create a trigger, go to “Automated flows” and choose “Triggers” in the menu:

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for setting up a trigger to wish your recipients a happy birthday.

Upon entering the view, click the blue button “Create trigger”. Afterward, a beam will appear on the bottom of the page.

The first step is to create a meaningful name for the trigger, to help you identify it later on – i.e. if you’re creating a flow that should be based upon whether or not this trigger has been activated. Click on next when you’re ready.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for setting up a trigger to wish your recipients a happy birthday.

We’re now going to determine what the trigger should do. We have different options but for this scenario, we should send out an email campaign.
Choose the campaign and click on next.

Next, you will need to determine based upon which events the trigger should be fired.
If the option you’re looking for is greyed out, please, reach out to support. There will be some areas that need to be set up.

For this scenario, we want to send out the email campaign on, before, or after a profile’s birthday. Therefore, the option “based on a profile’s date field” should be chosen.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for setting up a trigger to wish your recipients a happy birthday.

When this option is selected, you will have to choose what list the date field is on. Afterward, you will choose what date field should fire the trigger. In this scenario, the date field would probably be named “Birth Date”.

When this selection has been made, new options will be available at the bottom of the page.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for setting up a trigger to wish your recipients a happy birthday.

Here, you should choose whether the trigger should be fired on, before or after the date. “The date” can also be changed to either the next anniversary of the date or every anniversary of the date.

In this case, I’ve made the following options:

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for setting up a trigger to wish your recipients a happy birthday.

This will fire the trigger and thereby send the email campaign to every relevant profile one week before their birthday.
Click next.

We’ve now reached the final step before activating the trigger. Here, you’ll input all of the information your profiles would need: send from name and email, and what email address should be used for replies.

Google Analytics can help you with tracking, this is active as a default. You can choose what activity time the trigger should, i.e. if you don’t want to send the campaign out in the middle of the night. Tick the checkbox, and you can choose a time period when the trigger should send out the email campaign.

Finally, you have the option to only send the email campaign to (a) certain segment(s), i.e. VIP profiles.

When you’re done setting up the trigger, click on “Save & Activate”, or “Save” if you want to continue working on it.

To set up an abandoned cart trigger, you need to have Tracking set up.

Read more about Tracking Setup here.

Create your content

First, you go to Email Campaigns and create the campaign you want to send in your abandoned cart trigger. In the menu to the right, at the very bottom, you will have a content option called Tracking. This tracking feed will make sure that the products your contacts have abandoned in the cart in your webshop will be merged into the campaign when it is sent out. This tracking feed must be in the campaign in order for you to create an abandoned cart trigger in MarketingPlatform.

Drag this into your campaign – you do not need to choose a grid first.

The system will now build the content for you via a tracking feed that was created when you set up tracking. You can now edit this content and design the campaign as you wish. By default, the product title, price and image are selected.

Define which tag is a link and choose whether you want links on all content or only on some of the elements.

Consider building a regular grid above the tracking feed. Here you can, for example, write why the campaign has been sent, how long the cart has been saved or some other relevant information.

Save the campaign when you are satisfied with the content.

Read more about how to build a campaign with feeds here.

Set up your trigger

In the menu on the left, go to Automated Flows and select Triggers.

Click on Create Trigger.

Name your trigger.

In the next step, select Send Campaign and then select the campaign you have just created for this purpose.

Now you need to choose which action should trigger the campaign to be sent and here you choose Based on tracking abandoned cart. Now you need to select your list and you need to choose when your campaign should be sent.

Finally, you can check that the sender information is correct – it is taken from your list settings.

Save by pressing either Save and Activate or simply Save. If you only press Save, you can subsequently activate your trigger by clicking on the red cross on the specific trigger in the overview.
