Use the update contact field feature to update your contacts’ information based on which links they click on in your campaign. In your campaign, you have a number of links. The links tell their own news or topic. By collecting knowledge about what your contacts click on, you will know more about them and can therefore send them more relevant campaigns.

How to update contact field

Create your campaign. Insert links to the various news/products and click on “Update contact fields”. You will see a list of all the links there are in your campaign. For each link you can define with which value your contacts should be updated when they click on that link.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform, picturing the instructions to Update Data Field.Connect your links with your contact fields

In this way, you can get more information about your contacts, without them having to fulfill, for example, “update profile” form. You can use the collected information to create segmented sendings, so that you only send the most relevant news/products to your contacts.

You can easily upload your own images to MarketingPlatform, so that you can use in your campaigns. You can also use one of our integrations for image banks such as Pexels, Pixabay, Iconfinder etc.

Upload your images

Once you have inserted an image content element into your campaign, you can easily upload images by clicking on “Add”. From here, you can upload your images in two ways. You can either download the image from your website or shop by copying the image’s URL. You can also download the image directly from your own desk either via the path finder or drag and drop.
Once the image is loaded and you can see it in your image bank, click on it, in order to insert it into the campaign.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform, picturing the instructions for using and editing Images.Upload your images via URL or directly from your desk

Edit your images

You can edit different things on your images after you have uploaded them to MarketingPlatform. Via “Edit” you get the opportunity to:

  • Resize: Change the size of the image
  • Crop: Crop the image so that you only get the most important part
  • Flip: Flip the image horizontally or vertically
  • Rotate: Rotate the image to the right or left
  • Desaturate: Change the saturation of the image to make it darker/brighter

After editing, save the image as a new image – without overwriting the original. Additionally, in case, you need more refined image edits, you can use a free online image editor, and after you are done upload the image to the platform.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform, picturing the instructions for using and editing Images.Edit your images easily and quickly in the editor

Inside the actual builder, you also have the opportunity to change the image’s view. You can use padding to create a space to all other elements and you can define the size of the image. You can insert the mobile view of the image, how wide it should be displayed. If in doubt, use our predefined settings.

If you have several pictures next to each other that must have the same dimensions, you can use “Crop all images in grid by height”. It will help you to easily and quickly get all your images cropped so that they are perfect and sharp in your newsletter.

You can take a closer look at uploading pictures and our image editing tool in the video here:

You can insert both social share options and social links in your campaigns. Social links are the ones you will often use in your footer, and they will link to your business page, on, for example, Facebook, LinkedIn, or Twitter. Social share is used to allow your contacts to share the newsletter on their social media profiles.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform, picturing the instructions to use options for Social Share and Social Links.

Social Links and Social Share

The feature behind links and share looks the same, and you have the same options to choose from in both features.

You often use social links in your footer, so your contacts can follow your different pages and profiles. For example, go to your footer section and insert the grid that you want to use. After that, choose social links and drag them over into your grid. The menu on the right now changes, and you will see different settings for social links. For example, you can choose:

Select type: Choose whether the icon should be round or squared
Select size: Choose how big the icon should appear
Select icon: Choose which social media you would like to insert. Click add if you have chosen other than Facebook.

You can then define the position of the icons – left align, right align or center align. Below you can choose the order of your icons – maybe you want the most important icon to be the first in line or in the middle. You may also need only one icon, and not three that are used by default. If that is the case, delete the icons that you do not need. Here you can also insert your own link, when you click on a small chain icon.

Top and right spacing help you to create a distance from other icons. For this, you can also use padding as you know from all other elements.

As you build your campaign, you can insert different links in your campaign – link to your homepage, insert unsubscribe link, insert link to Modify form or insert a link to social media.

Insert link to your website

Link in text field

Every time you have a text field in your campaign, a menu section pops up. The menu section has various options, such as, for example, insert a link option. Find the small ‘chain icon’ and a new box will appear.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform, picturing the instructions to Insert Links in Your Email Campaign.Insert links in your campaign

From here the URL is selected by default, but it is here in the dropdown menu, where you can choose to insert a confirmation link, an unsubscribe link, a link to modify form or a send to friend form, if you have a setup of that kind.

Link on button

If you would like to have a link on your button, you can do so by putting the cursor on the button, and then moving the cursor to the menu on the right. On the top, you will find a link field in which you can insert your url.

If you would like to link to your Modify form or Send to friend form, you need to take some extra steps. You need to do as described earlier in the “Link in the text field” section, then copy the link (e.g. %%confirmlink%%) and insert it in the menu to the right.

Choosing a Font that is just right

Choosing the right Font can be as important as anything else to give your Email Campaign the desired look and feel, as well as keeping your digital identity intact.

In MarketingPlatform there are hundreds of Fonts to choose from when creating your Email Campaign and there are several things to consider when choosing a Font. Which Font suits your digital identity, should you use the same Font as on your website, and will the various inboxes even show the Font that you have selected? We will cover that in the article below – but rest to be assured, our platform will make sure that whatever you choose – things cannot get too far off track.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform, picturing the instructions for choosing Fonts in Email Campaigns.

In the image above you can see that we have chosen the Archivo Font Family. Below it, you will see a Fallback Font Family, which in this case is Helvetica.

The difference between a Web Font and a Web Safe Font

In Email Marketing, we usually talk about web fonts & web-safe fonts. Why is this important? Not all email clients can show all fonts, but do not worry – MarketingPlatform will always make sure your Emails can be read, and you can safely choose your preferred Font in our Email Campaign Builder.

White text that says "Google Fonts" on a blue background.

Choose any Font in the Campaign Builder

Web fonts are a great way to let web designers create a certain feel and uniqueness to the content on your website. The possibilities are many, they are easy to install and can add that extra touch we all strive to find when designing. When it comes to email, most browsers and email clients do not have these web fonts installed and there is nothing you can do about it. iOS and Apple Mail, in general, are great in supporting fonts but the support is somewhat limited across Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, various email apps for handheld devices and the many variations of Outlook and Hotmail.

This is where the difference between web fonts and web-safe fonts come into play. Web-safe fonts are a small selection of fonts which are supported across all email inbox services. These fonts are Times New Roman, Verdana, Georgia, Arial etc. The safest is therefore to simply go with a web-safe font to be on the safe side. But you do not have to.

Font create drawn by a hand with a pencil.

In MarketingPlatform we let you choose from any of the more than a thousand Google Fonts. Find and choose your font and we will tell the inbox to show this font wherever it is supported. Furthermore, we are let you choose a Web Safe Font as a fallback which will be shown on all inboxed and devices that do not support your chosen Web Font.

This is a great compromise where you get the uniqueness and style of a Web Font, while still having the safe fallback option of a Web Safe Font.

Outlook and Hotmail do not always care…

…about your fallback font. Some versions of Outlook (did you notice the plural s on versions?) will simply render the Email Campaign and show Times New Roman no matter what you tell them to do – and there is nothing you or we can do about this.

When writing the HTML and styling of an Email Campaign you are always ‘just’ sending instructions to the inbox of how you want the Email Campaign to be shown. We have learned how to specify these instructions targeting all the quirkiness of (especially) Outlook, but it will always be up to the inbox how they want to show your Email Campaign.

Most inboxes will show and support your selected Font and you can go ahead and be creative with your selection of Fonts, but rest to be assured – the fallback font will have your back. So whatever happens, your message will always be readable.

What if you want to send different content to different audiences and target them with more personalized content? Imagine sending the same newsletter to your entire contact list, but one in which the recipients will receive a customized version that matches their interests and preferences.

It may sound complicated, but that is not the case at all. It is easy to set up and work with Dynamic Content on a daily basis.

1. How to use Dynamic Content in Email Campaigns

Dynamic Content is content that changes according to the individual recipient. Instead of sending many different campaigns to different segments, dynamic content can replace parts of your newsletter more intelligently. By using dynamic content, you can target your subscribers based on the segment they belong to and send them more relevant and personalized content which will be inherently more effective and engaging than sending them a general one.

As Dynamic Content is based on the subscriber’s unique data, interests, and behavior, the first thing that you need to do is create segments.

Data-based segmentation can be created on any data you have on your clients including basic demographic data (age, location, gender, etc.), preferences/interests (favorite store, favorite book/movie genre, etc.), and similar, or deep data such as last purchase, purchase value, coupon code, etc.

Behavior-based segmentation is made on customers’ activity in campaigns (opens/clicks), or on the website (most visited pages, categories/products, etc.)

Once you’ve planned your strategy and created your segments accordingly, you can continue and insert the dynamic content in your email campaign.

2. How to insert Dynamic Content in Email Campaigns

You can include Dynamic Content in your email campaign by inserting Dynamic Blocks that will correspond to the segments that you have created.

Access the Email Campaign Builder and start by adding the desired grid. Dynamic Blocks can be inserted anywhere in your email campaign, including the header and footer.

To insert a Dynamic Block, click on the grid options menu (see image below) and select Dynamic Block.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for using Dynamic Content in Email Campaigns.

Add your Dynamic Blocks one by one by clicking on the “+” sign (see image below). You can also add/remove Dynamic Blocks by accessing the Properties tab.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for using Dynamic Content in Email Campaigns.

Setup

Under Dynamic Content Module Settings, you can set up which segment should receive which Dynamic Block(s). The setup should be done individually for each of the Dynamic Blocks that you have added.

Please note that the “DEFAULT” block is inserted automatically and will be sent to profiles that do not match any of the segments i.e., criteria defined for your Dynamic Blocks. Thus, profiles that do not match any of the Dynamic Blocks that you have created, will receive the content from the “DEFAULT” Dynamic Block.

As for profiles matching multiple Dynamic Blocks, you can choose whether you want to send these contacts the content from all matching blocks or only the content from the first matching block.

At the bottom of the Setup tab, you must name and save your Dynamic Content Block. Please note that you need to add content to your Dynamic Block and select the corresponding segment/segmentation rule before saving it. Otherwise, you will not be able to save it. Once saved, the Dynamic Block will be available in your Library under Intelligent Modules/Dynamic Content Blocks.

Properties

To define the content for your Dynamic Blocks, access the Properties tab on the right and select the corresponding existing segment. The Block will be sent to the contacts belonging to the selected segment.

Aside from selecting an existing segment, you can apply segmentation rule(s) directly in the Properties tab, based on existing data fields in the platform. You can also select a segment and filter it further by applying additional segmentation rules, e.g., filter by profile source, as shown in the image below.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for using Dynamic Content in Email Campaigns.

Please note that the “Edit Recipients” option in the Builder will be unavailable and once you have selected your list/segments you cannot change them afterward, due to the fact that you cannot change the applicable data fields, as your dynamic content rules are based on these data fields.

In the upper right corner, you also have the options to add/remove/copy a Dynamic Block.

Don’t forget to name your Dynamic Block at the bottom of the Properties tab and save it in the Setup tab.

Build

To add content to your Dynamic Blocks, click on the Build tab and add elements for each of your Dynamic Blocks.

In the example given below (of a clothing webshop), segmentation is based on the data about the type of apparel that subscribers are interested in, and two segments are created accordingly.

Items intended for subscribers interested in women’s apparel are inserted into the first block “Women”. Respectively, items intended for subscribers interested in men’s apparel are inserted into the second block “Men”.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for using Dynamic Content in Email Campaigns.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for using Dynamic Content in Email Campaigns.

Subscribers that lack information about the type of apparel they are interested in (and thereby do not fall into any of the two segments), will receive content inserted in the “DEFAULT” block. In this example, a combination of the most popular items from both types of apparel is inserted in this block.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for using Dynamic Content in Email Campaigns.

Additionally, a feed can be incorporated to allow synchronization with your website to include e.g., newly added items, price changes, etc.

You can insert a Feed Block the same way as Dynamic Block, by clicking on the grid options menu and selecting Feed Block. In case you want to remove your Dynamic/Feed Block, just click on “Remove Intelligence” in the Dynamic/Feed Block options menu (see the image below).

Dynamic Sender is a feature available in MarketingPlatform, that allows you to assign Sender Details directly from a feed, rather than entering this information manually every time you send out an email campaign.

By using Dynamic Sender, you can modify the standard Sender Fields with dynamic content that will come directly from a previously saved feed link on your account on MarketingPlatform. The following Sender Details will be automatically input from your feed:

  • Send From This Name
  • Send Reply Emails to
  • Email Subject
  • Email Preheader

In order to be able to use the Dynamic Sender feature, you must have the corresponding Sender Details defined in your feed and you must have previously saved/loaded the feed on MarketingPlatform.

Please note that it is not mandatory to use the feed in the very campaign you are sending out in order to use the “Dynamic Sender” functionality.

Dynamic Sender Setup

Dynamic Sender Setup can be found under the “Preview and Send” tab when finalizing the send-out of an email campaign.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for using Dynamic Sender.

To enable the option, select “Yes, use Dynamic Sender” and additional text box fields will appear on the right side of the standard Sender Fields (see image below). Newly appearing text boxes will have buttons on the right side accordingly.

Send from this Name

To select the Sender Name, click on the button “Get Name from External Content”, select your feed, and select the corresponding element from the feed, as shown in the images below:

Send Reply Emails To

Repeat the same process to select the Reply-To Email Address: click on the button “Get Reply from External Content” and select the corresponding element from the feed.

Email Preheader

Identically, you can select your Preheader from your external content, as shown in the image below:

Email Subject

As for Email Subject, apart from the dynamic element from your feed, you also have the option to include a static element, which will be followed by the dynamic element. Just fill out the empty text box and click on “Change” to select the dynamic element from your feed.

Once you have finished setting up the Dynamic Sender, you can continue and send your email campaign. The recipients will receive the email campaign with the Sender’s Details as defined in your feed.

Please note that in case you have selected that the campaign should only be posted on social media, then the Dynamic Sender Setup functionally will be disabled by default and will appear as greyed out/locked.

When you’ve created a campaign, and the campaign is ready for broadcast, you have two options in MarketingPlatform – Send Preview and Send. The first one allows you to send a campaign preview to a single email address for testing purposes, whereas the second one is the actual sending of the campaign to a list or segment – immediate, scheduled, or repeat sending.

Preview sending

Previewing the campaign before the actual sending is highly recommended as in this way, you’d be able to see how your subscribers will see the campaign, and of course, to make any necessary edits before hitting the Send button.

When you click the Send Preview button a small window will open, where you’ll need to enter the recipient’s email address, tick the ‘Yes, preview as subscriber’ box, and select a subscriber’s email address.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for sending a campaign newsletter.

This will not only give you a glimpse of the actual newsletter appearance but also allow you to test every function in the campaign before the actual broadcast. For instance, if you’re sending a campaign with personalized content (i.e. if you’re merging subscribers’ data in the newsletter), this feature lets you test the functionality of the campaign.

Actual sending

For the actual sending, you can choose between sending the campaign immediately and scheduling the campaign for a date & time of your choice. You can also opt for repeat sending of the campaign.

1. By clicking the Send button, you will land on the Schedule section, where the field “Yes, send my campaign now” is preselected.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for sending a campaign newsletter.

If you’d like to set a different sending schedule, simply uncheck this box and set the desired time and date.

2. The next step is ‘Activities’, where you can enable the option for repeat sending by ticking ‘Yes, use Repeat Sending’. Here, you can choose an exact date when to start and stop sending the campaign, or you can check the box ‘Never stop Repeat Sending’.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for sending a campaign newsletter.

This feature is super useful not only if you’re sending feed campaigns at regular intervals (weekly, biweekly, monthly, etc.), but also for sending regular updates to your client base of new arrivals at the shop, or weekly discounted products and similar.

3. The last step is ‘Preview and send’, where you can edit the sender’s name and email address as well as the reply-to email. Please note that this info will be filled in with the info from the list the campaign is made for.

Alternatively, if your sender info is located in a feed, you can use the Dynamic sender feature.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for sending a campaign newsletter.

By clicking the ‘Send Campaign’ button you will see a window with all relevant information in regard to your campaign including the count of subscribers who will receive the campaign.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for sending a campaign newsletter.

You can finish the sending by clicking the ‘Confirm Sending’ button.

Edit recipients

Although the list/segment the campaign is made for must be selected in the first step of creating a campaign, you can always edit recipients later on – a feature available inside the builder.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform picturing the instructions for sending a campaign newsletter.

The Edit recipients option allows you to change the recipients of the campaign, i.e., to select another list(s) or segment(s) to the campaign that will be sent to.

In MarketingPlatform, we have made it easy to merge fields as first name and other personal information from the individual recipient’s contact sheet into the campaigns. It makes your emails more personal and the contact will feel closer to you as the sender.

Insert the first name of your recipients

Say hello to your recipients in a proper way. Although the recipients of course are aware that they are receiving a newsletter sent to many, a personal greeting still helps reinforce the bond between your business and your recipients. It also gives the impression that the upcoming newsletters will bear the mark of certain degree of personalization and tailor-made content.

Select and insert

Select where in your text you would like to insert the contact field, select “Insert Contact fields’’ and then find the contact field you would like to merge into. Many companies import the first name of their contacts, but you can merge any field. It may be that you will merge the name of the event the contact has signed up for, the name of their pet or their date of birth in a birthday trigger.

At the sending, we check each recipient and merge the field into the campaign. You can insert a value that we can call back on, if a recipient does not have a first name in their contact sheet. It could for example be “Dear customer”.

Build your campaign from scratch or use a template

Find Email Campaigns in the Menu and choose Create Campaign. Then you should choose the recipient of your campaign. It can either be a contact list or a segment – you can change recipient group again later. After that, you need to name your campaign. This name is for internal use only, so name it so that you can easily see your campaigns.

Next, you can choose to create your campaign from either your own templates or by using one of the available standard templates and themes. You can also create your campaign from scratch via a blank campaign. The four options include:

  • Templates: Templates without design, but with content elements in which you can easily insert your own content
  • Themes with design: Templates with design, where you insert your content
  • Previous campaigns: Reuse one of your previous campaigns
  • Blank: Start from scratch with a blank template and build the campaign yourself

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform, picturing the instructions to create an email campaign.Create a campaign

Create your campaign as blocks with content

When building your own campaign, select one or more Grids in the panel on the right. They will form a basis for the separation of the content in your campaign.

In addition, they will be a foundation tool for optimizing a mobile view.

In the example below there are 50/50 Grids. One without content and one with. After choosing a Grid, drag a Content Element such as headline, image or button over into its place. From here, you simply need to replace our dummy text with your own text and can edit with the possibilities that arise from the content you have chosen.

Each module consists of both a grid and content elements.

A screenshot from the interface of MarketingPlatform, picturing the instructions to create an email campaign.Drag content into the campaign
